How do I add a background layer?

I would like to rotoscope the video I have imported to Mocha PRO.
I want to rotoscope a person out, and there in AE I will put a bench behind him.
I don’t know exactly where the bench will be, and I want to be able to see it
when I rotoscope the person in Mocha PRO.
How do I add a layer in Mocha PRO and tell it to show the bench ?
I have managed to do the following:

  • Create a new layer in Mocha PRO.
  • Move the 4 corners of the layer to the corners of the video
  • In the layer properties I chose ‘Insert Clip’ and chose the bench image sequence.
  • Now I see the bench, but there are 2 problems:
    1. The bench is always on top of the video, on top of all the layers I have
      rotoscoped in Mocha PRO.
    2. I cannot turn the layer off. No matter how many times I turn the
‘EYE’ icon off in the layer - I still see the bench image.
How can I put the bench under the rotoscoped layers, but over the ‘background’ (and be able to turn it on & off as I wish) ?
      Thanks.

Hi!
This is an interesting use of insert, and one that we have not planned for in our workflow. We use insert for rendering out inserts and previewing what the insert looks like, so the only workaround I think I can give you is to turn the opacity down in the insert tab and work that way. It will still be on top of everything, and you’ll probably want to lock the layer.
Cheers,
Mary

You can use mocha Pro to preview the roto as you describe:

  1. Roto your object
  2. Select the layer and choose Align Surface to make the surface full frame.
  3. Inset your back ground footage
  4. Under Insert>Comp tab choose “use layer mattes & invert”
I believe that this is what you are looking for…
Then with layer selected you can toggle the “mattes” button in the view icons on/off to hide that background image. Note: if the little paint bucket icon is active, mattes button will toggle a color overlay here instead.
    Best,
    Ross
