How to track distort plane image?

Hallo everybody,
if I have these type of distort images:
Image: http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/4177/2cbu.jpg
Image: http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/1218/r19q.jpg

how can I make a planar tracking to replace original advertisement with a new one?

Many thanks!

Hi Duca,

If you have mocha Pro, you can use the insert tool to warp the insert to fit the curve. If you do not have mocha Pro, you will need to export the planar data to After Effects and apply a warp after the tracking data is applied.

I have Mocha AE 2.5 and Mocha Pro 3.1.
I’m going to see how works Insert Toll.
Many Thanks!

Another issue is that,
I’ve to put a mask above my second corner pin. You can easily see it at the top left of curved building. Is a white world map:

I’ve done a roto in Mocha and was pretty good. but when I’m imported it in AE (select clip, Edit/ paste Mocha Mask) I can see the Roto Mask but without keyframes (even if the stopwatch is active…)

What did happen?

THX!

Sorry, but i really didn’t understand how apply Insert tool for this issue… any suggestions or tutorials about? Many thanks!

Hi Duca,

There’s a part of this tutorial about 3/4 of the way through about attacking digital makeup to someone’s face that uses the grid warper tool in the insert tool: http://www.imagineersystems.com/videos/webinar-digital-makeup-retouching/view

Basically, go to the insert module inside of mocha Pro, in the middle of the bottom section of the insert tab is a “show mesh” checkbox, check that box and adjust your level of subdivisions, now you can warp your insert however you like.

Cheers,
Mary

Okay, I’m going to check it.
(I didn’t receive notification…)

Hi Mary, I saw tutorial you suggested:
if I well understood, before I have to make a simple planar tracking about the area and than I should go to Insert tab to apply Warp to modify the grid shape. But I didn’t understand how apply Planar Surface…
If you see this frame from my clip, you can see where I’ve to apply track and my first Xplane track:

Image: http://img542.imageshack.us/img542/5310/btt5.png

But In this case, I’ve also another problems… this is not a simple billboard bust there are many moving advertisement images and I can track it cause track seems to follow the moving images rather than billboard edges…:

Image: http://img203.imageshack.us/img203/9828/6ze6.png
Image: http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/7146/et0v.png

So, I ask:
1 - How to track a billboard edges and not moving images inside the billboard …?
2 - When I tacked it, how can apply a Planar surface if the curved? I’ve to apply maybe two o tree Planar surfaces to match this curvature (In tutorial you suggested were tho approximative planar surfaces) and than apply Insert Tool (Warp)?
Help please!
thx!

Hi there,

Looking at your footage, it is clear you used a wide angle lens and must solve for the lens before you do anything in this file.
Track the “Gap” signs and front of that building instead of the screen, and move the surface tool over the screen while you track. You don’t have to be right on the area you’re trying to track, just on the same plane.
Use adjust track if you need to correct the track for any drift.
Use the insert tool to warp the surface tool (that’s your planar surface).
Add motion blur if you wish and render

What part of using the surface tool are you having trouble with? It should just follow the track from wherever you placed it. Let me know.

So, I’ve to track GAP signs (just one or all 3?) in a separate track;
Make a XPlane for a curved billboard (i’ve already done);
Link the Gap Track to this billboard X-plane tracck and check if all is right.
Than I’ve to apply Inset Tool to Curved Xplane and try to macht my new logo (or animation or clip…)
Is that right?
And when you say “add motion blur” do you mean in After Effects, (to my corner pin image) before rendering. I think we shuold always ad Motion blur to a corner pin image… right?

Mary, really many, many thaks!

Hi Mary,
trying and retrying I have succeeded in almost all doing what I wanted.
About export Shape it was a FPS problem (AE Interpret Footage and Clip setting in Mocha), but anyway, all right now.
About Warp (Insert Tool) is non so easy to match a curved plane but, how can you see, I make it (enough good, I think), switching carefully between Level 1 to Level 4.

Image: http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/4963/aqps.png

But now, I tried to export this “curved billboard shape” in AE but I didn’t find any solutions…
I tried to save by (Tab INSERT) Export Offset Data
and
I tried to save by (Tab TRACK) Export Tracking Data

but I can only obtain this result:

So, what have I to do…?

Please help, I’m almost to end!

Hi Duca,

The insert tool doesn’t export a gridwarp to anywhere. You have to render it out as a pass. Then comp that pass. You’ll get a pass with its own alpha, warp, and motion blur though.

Hi Mary,
right, I discovered it… but I think this is a big problem and maybe at the same time an improvement suggestion: If you can export a curved corner pin as a rectangular corner pin you can in AE completely control your insert logo, applying on it some necessary filters as edge blur, motion blur, fast blur and make correctlywitn you clip background a great color matching and CC.
Just a pretty suggestion, i think.:)Anywhere, i imported in AD just a rectangular corner pin tracked in Mocha and I warped it with Warp filters in AE. Than I could easily apply to my warped corner pin all filters i said. And was good.

Many thanks!
