Planar versus point tracking

I am looking to composite a 3d model head onto a moving, headless body. I approached this by tracking the head with a green mask on, in front of a green screen background. (Mocha is actually able to grab data to track using the mask with little other markers.)

The problem I’m having is getting the surface center point in the optimal spot (for attaching the 3d model later). When in the right spot, the surface is either too big or too little and so interferes with a decent track. I am otherwise able to get a good track WITHOUT the center surface point where needed, so this is not necessarily a marker issue.

Is there a way to do this using planar tracking?

This may be a case where point tracking is the better option.

Thoughts, comments?

Try turning off scale and just track translation?
