I’m having some major problems with importing my mocha shape into AE. Its not doing it correctly. It looks great in Mocha AE v2 but comes into AE all wrong. not in sync with the shot at all.

I’m using interlaced footage 29.97 1440 x 1080.

Hi Ross thank you for the speedy reply. That maybe my problem I treated it as just 29.97 with interlacing didn’t use the 59.97 trick. Anyhow I sent you the mocha ae v2 file.

I will try what you said but I guess that means doing the roto over again.

Just to confirm in AE make the comp 59.94 with no lower field first then do the same to my footage right?

If you have de-interlaced the project in mocha there is a trick to re-comping in AE. You need to set your comp frame rate to 59.94 and have the source file interpreted as interlaced.

When you de-interlace in mocha it puts every field on a unique frame and doubles the comp length. To do this in AE, you do need to do as described above or else your shape will have double the keyframe length of your comp.

Solution Details This describes the recommended workflow for rotoscoping interlaced video footage (without pulldown) in mocha for AEv2 and sending to mocha shape:

29.97 source footage*

In mocha:

  1. Import footage. Set the frame rate to 59.94 and the project setting to Separate Fields (NTSC*).
  2. Do your track/roto work
  3. Export your shape data

In After Effects:

  1. Interpret AE footage as interlaced, lower field first*
  2. Set up AE comp NTSC, 59.94 fps and drag the clip to comp > this emulates the double length comp we like we do in mocha: every field is now on a progressive frame
  3. Select desired layer and paste mocha shape data
  4. Finish your composite, then drag that comp to a NTSC 29.97 comp to render
  • For PAL use 25i, 50p, and upper field first

You shouldn’t have to redo the roto. I will take a look at your files and get back to you.
