Tracking markers

Is there a “optimal” tracking marker for use on set?

Hi there,
Yes, ideal tracking “markers” for mocha are patterns on the plane that you want to track. But it varies for every shot. If you’re tracing a wall, it can be as simple as a picture hanging on that wall, o a checkerboard printed on a piece of paper.
Tracking screens though usually just need the borders of the screen to track, and you can use adjust track to correct, so you keep all the wonderful in camera reflections on the screen when you composite.
We have a video on shooting for planar tracking on our website, you might want to check it out. http://www.imagineersystems.com/videos/how-to-shoot-for-planar-tracking/
Basically, understand that mocha is a planar tracker, and doesn’t much care for point markers as much as it locks right onto patterns, textures, or broad swaths of planar (think walls or the front of someone’s face pane) data. If you need a grasp on how mocha thinks, please watch: http://www.imagineersystems.com/videos/how-mocha-thinks/
I hope that helps, and let me know if you have any questions!
Cheers,
Mary
